We are Michigan Independent Colleges & Universities, representing Michigan’s not-for-profit independent colleges and universities. As the voice of Michigan's not-for-profit institutions of higher education, our goal is to increase awareness of the impact MICU members have on higher education in Michigan. With nearly 100,000 students at our institutions, Michigan independent colleges educate approximately 15 percent of all college students in the state.

Offering a dynamic tapestry of high impact learning and engagement programs, a global perspective, and forward-leaning innovations, each of these 25 non-profit colleges and universities plays a distinctive role in Michigan’s progress. With smaller class sizes, higher graduation rates, and impressive job placement, independent colleges and universities deliver excellence year after year. With over 12,000 bachelor’s degrees awarded each year Michigan’s independent colleges and universities are strong contributors to the state’s talent pool.

Michigan’s independent colleges and universities have also made incredible investments in their local communities and for students through capital projects. With over $1 billion directly invested in the past decade resulting in over 6,500 jobs for Michiganders, $600 million in income for Michigan families, and $2 billion in economic contributions in the state these privately funded projects are essential assets for the future of Michigan’s communities, businesses, and workforce.

The mission of the Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities is to plan, conduct, coordinate, supervise and finance activities that promote the well-being of the private, independent, non-profit institutions of higher education in Michigan.

MICU serves its members through government relations, public policy development and advocacy.
